It makes more sense for you to accumulate more vocabulary by reading more and learning more words. And words are made out of readings of kanji. Some of those readings are on, others are kun. It's just the way the word is. You don't choose between speaking "on" and "kun." I keep being told by a person who speaks multiple languages, although not the Japanese language, that it is what it is and you just have to learn it.
