gomi wo miru you na me ゴミを見るような目

In Japanese, gomi wo miru you na me ゴミを見るような目, "eyes like [they] are seeing trash," refers to the disgusted face of a character in manga and anime when they're looking down at another character in such way it's like they're looking at garbage.

Such eyes are also called gomi wo miru me ゴミを見る目, "eyes [that] see trash," or "eyes for looking at trash."

Kotegawa Chisa 古手川千紗, example of disgusted face, gomi wo miru you na me ゴミを見るような目.
Anime: Grand Blue, ぐらんぶる (Episode 2)

Examples

In most cases, gomi wo miru you na me are used when a girl grossed out by what a guy said or did, specially if it's something perverted. They've stopped seeing the guy as a human being, and started seeing him as a walking piece of trash.

Obviously, no matter how much a filthy, lowly creature that human trash is, he isn't literally "garbage." Hence why the term is eyes "that look like" they're looking at garbage, ~you na ~ような.

Anime: Iya na Kao Sare Nagara Opantsu Misete Moraitai 嫌な顔されながらおパンツ見せてもらいたい (All Episodes)
  • Context: in this anime, the protagonist asks random girls to show him their panties. They're absolutely disgusted by such request.
  • I'm not joking. This is a real anime.

Style-wise, gomi wo miru you na me is often drawn by adding a shadow covering the character's eyes and forehead.

Nase Mitsuki 名瀬美月, example of disgusted face, gomi wo miru you na me ゴミを見るような目.
Anime: Kyoukai no Kanata 境界の彼方 (Episode 3)

Since there's a shadow, sometimes the eyes are drawn without highlights.

Kotegawa Chisa 古手川千紗, example of disgusted face, gomi wo miru you na me ゴミを見るような目.
Anime: Grand Blue, ぐらんぶる (Episode 1)

This shadow often has nothing to do with illumination, or whether the character's head is angled downwards. Instead, it's like forehead shadow used when a character is feeling sick. They're looking at trash, and the displeasure shows in their faces.

Yame Yukana 八女ゆかな, example of gomi wo miru you na me ゴミを見るような目.
Anime: Hajimete no Gyaru はじめてのギャル (Episode 1)
  • Context: a guy literally tries begging at a girl's feet for her to become his girlfriend.
    • dogeza
      土下座
The term for the prostrating pose the guy is making.
    • gyaru
      ギャル
The term for this kind of girl.

It's important to note, however, that gomi wo miru you na me is a state of mind, and not just a way to draw a character's face.

Therefore, it's very possible for a character to have a totally normal face in appearance, but from context they're clearly looking at someone else with utter disappointment and disgust.

Meidri メイドリー, example of disgusted face, gomi wo miru you na me ゴミを見るような目.
Anime: Ishuzoku Reviewers, 異種族レビュアーズ (Episode 1)
  • Context: a girl silently judges a bunch of male customers for their indecent hobbies.

On the other hand, it's also possible for a character to make a face of disgust even though they aren't actually disgusted.

Sakuranomiya Maika 桜ノ宮苺香, example of disgusted face, gomi wo miru you na me ゴミを見るような目. The text reads hiku' ひくっ, which means literally "pull," but in this case "repulsed," "grossed out."
Anime: Blend S, ブレンド・S (Episode 1)
  • Context: in Blend S, burendo-esu ブレンド・S, the protagonist works in a café where she has to pretend to be a "super sadist," do-esu ドS, character.
  • hiku'...
    ひくっ・・・
    To pull. (literally.)
To step back. (because they're feeling repulsed.)

Although it's generally just one girl disgusted by a guy, sometimes the guy is such an irredeemable waste of oxygen that pretty much every girl around finds him repulsive.

Example of disgusted faces, gomi wo miru you na me ゴミを見るような目. Characters: Darkness ダクネス, Aqua アクア, Megumin めぐみん, Yunyun ゆんゆん, and Wiz ウィズ.
Anime: Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! この素晴らしい世界に祝福を! (Episode 11, OVA)

Sometimes, the guy didn't do anything gross, he's innocent, he's been accused of doing it, and the girl doesn't believe him.

    Stop grossing me out!!
  • {hito wo shinjiteru} me janai-n-dakedo!!
    人を信じてる目じゃないんだけど!!
[Those] aren't eyes [of someone that is] {believing in people}, though!!
  • {gomi wo miru} me-tsuki nanda kedo kono ko!!
    ゴミを見る目つきなんだけどこの娘!!
    (dislocation.)
    • kono ko wa {gomi wo miru} me-tsuki nanda kedo!!
      この娘はゴミを見る目つきなんだけど!!
As for this girl, [she has] a look-in-her-eyes [that] {sees trash}!!
This girl has a trash-seeing expression,!!
This girl's eyes are seeing trash!!

As one would expect, disgusted faces aren't limited to girls. Guys can do it too, though it's less common.

Kamado Tanjirou 竈門炭治郎, example of disgusted face, gomi wo miru you na me ゴミを見るような目.
Anime: Kimetsu no Yaiba 鬼滅の刃 (Episode 11)
  • Context: Tanjirou 炭治郎 breaks the fourth wall and makes the same face as the anime watchers were making.

Also, although the term literally means the character looks like they're looking at "trash," it doesn't really need to be exactly "trash." It could be that it looks like they're looking at an insect, or some other filthy, lowly creature.

何なんだよその顔!! やめろーーーーっ! 何でそんな別の生き物見るような目で俺を見てんだ
Manga: Kimetsu no Yaiba 鬼滅の刃 (Chapter 20, 我妻善逸)
  • nan'nanda yo sono kao!!
    何なんだよその顔!!
What's up with that face!! (emotive right-dislocation)
  • yamero--------'!!
    やめろーーーーっ!
    Stop!!
  • nande sonna {{betsu no ikimono miru} you na} me de ore wo mite-n-da
    何でそんな別の生き物見るような目俺を見てんだ
Why are [you] looking at me with such eyes [that] {look like {[they] see a different species}}.
Why are you looking at me as if I'm a different creature. As if I'm not a human being like you.

And, of course, there are also cases where it's not the trash that's trashy, it's the character making the disgusted face that just looks at everyone as if they were trash.
