kouhai - Meaning in Japanese

WIP

In Japanese, kouhai 後輩 means "junior," in the sense they've been in a workplace, organization, school, or school club, for less time than you have. It can also refer to someone who has been doing an activity, like a sport, for less time than you.

The word kouhai is also romanized kōhai. It's the antonym of senpai 先輩, "senior," as one might guess from the meaning of the kanji of the words: saki 先 means "early," while ato 後 means "later." A senior is the one who joined earlier, before, the junior who joined later.

  • {Senpai ga Uzai} Kouhai no Hanashi
    先輩がうざい後輩の話
The Story of The Kouhai [whose] {Senpai is Annoying}.
    • Title of a series originally posted on Pixiv about an office lady who thinks her senpai is uzai, is "annoying," "infuriating," is noisy, gets in the way, is condescending, and so on.
    • This is possessive type of double subject construction turned into relative clause:
    • sono kouhai wa {senpai ga uzai}
      その後輩は先輩がうざい
{The senpai is annoying} is true about that kouhai.
      That kouhai's {senpai is annoying}.
Example of senpai-kouhai 先輩後輩, "seniors and juniors."

chuunibyou 中二病

What does chuunibyou mean in Japanese?

Literally, chuunibyou 中二病 translates to "middle school second-year syndrome," as in a disease someone around 13–14 years old would get. It's also romanized chūnibyō.

Sometimes, an anime character is said to have chuunibyou, to be a chuuni 厨ニ, but what is chuunibyou? Is it even a real disease?

Not really. The term chuunibyou 中二病 refers to thinking, acting, or talking like you live in a fantasy game, or in the world of a manga, with magic, secret organizations, super powers, and so on. Something which is extremely embarrassing and cringe for anyone older than 13 years old, and that you'll absolutely regret doing in front of others later in your life.

Dark Flame Master, also known as Togashi Yuuta 富樫勇太, example of chuunibyou 中二病.

senpai - Meaning in Japanese

In Japanese, senpai 先輩 means somebody's "senior." That is, someone who has been in an organization for longer than you have. This organization can be a school or school club with students, a workplace with employees and salaryman, etc. Sometimes it can refer to someone who has been doing an activity, like a sport, for longer than you have.

The opposite of senpai would be kouhai 後輩, "junior." For every senpai, there's a kouhai, and vice-versa. Someone who is neither a junior nor a senior is a douhai 同輩. These words are also romanized sempai, kōhai, and dōhai.
